  15. Under Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server, if there is no
  16. network adapter in the computer, the network services will not start.
  17. This behavior is by design, because many of these services would be
  18. useless without a network connection through the network adapter.
  19.  
  20. If you want to "fool" Windows NT into thinking a network is present,
  21. for example, when you want to demonstrate the network capabilities of
  22. Windows NT without being connected to a network, you can install the
  23. MS Loopback Adapter driver in the Network application in Control
  24. Panel. This driver allows the computer to connect to "network
  25. resources" that are actually local. This feature is particularly
  26. useful for demonstrating applications such as SQL Server for Windows NT
  27. at events and trade shows.

  29. The MS Loopback Adapter can also be used to enable a standalone
  30. computer to generate UPS Shutdown messages. The Windows NT "System
  31. Guide" states that the Alerter and Messenger services must be started
  32. for a computer to generate a UPS alert. These services will not start
  33. without a network adapter present. Installing the MS Loopback Adapter
  34. allows the Alerter and Messenger services to start on a standalone
  35. system.

  37. The MS Loopback Adapter driver supports the following frame types:

  39.    802.3 (Ethernet)
  40.    802.5 (Token Ring)
  41.    FDDI

  43. When you install the MS Loopback Adapter driver, the following key and
  44. subkeys are added to the Registry under
  45. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\:
